What is neem oil commonly used for?
Linseed oil is a natural vegetable oil that many horse owners use as part of their daily skincare routine. It is mainly used on horses with sensitive or easily itchy skin, or when the skin needs extra care.
Thanks to its rich, nourishing texture, neem oil is pleasant to use on areas where the skin feels dry, flaky or irritated. Many owners find it a welcome addition to their skincare routine, as the oil helps to keep the skin supple and feeling comfortable.
Neem oil is therefore well suited to horses that require extra skin care during certain seasons or under certain conditions, such as horses prone to eczema or those that are particularly sensitive to environmental factors.

Instructions for use for summer eczema (for external use)
🌿 Step 1 – Build-up phase (first few weeks)
During the initial period, you can use the product daily on the areas where your skin needs extra care.
Gently apply the oil or ointment to the skin itself, not just to the hair.
Examples of commonly used areas include:
moon comb
tail base
waistline
ears
At this stage, the oil is not usually rinsed out, so that it can soak in properly.
🌿 Step 2 – Maintenance phase
Once the skin feels calmer, many owners choose to reduce the frequency to reduce gradually:
-
apply every other day
-
after that, 2–3 times a week, depending on the circumstances
Bear in mind factors such as hot weather, large numbers of insects or periods when your horse is more sensitive. Adapt the grooming routine to suit your horse’s needs.
👀 What can you expect?
Many owners notice within a few weeks that the skin looks calmer and that their horse reacts more calmly to being touched in the areas that have been treated.
This gives the coat, mane and tail the chance to grow back beautifully.
🌿 A natural product – give it time
With natural products, it can take a while before you see how your horse responds to them. Many owners find that consistent use is a key part of their grooming routine.
🐎 Important when using on the tail and mane
Tail:
Apply the product between the hairs, directly onto the skin.
Don’t just rub it into your hair – that way, it’ll reach the areas where it’s needed more effectively.
Moons:
Apply it with your fingertips along the hairline at the crown of the head and gently work it through.
🌞 During the warmer months
Horses with eczema-prone skin often need a little more care in spring and summer than in winter. Many owners apply treatment several times a week during this period, depending on:
the weather
insect print
how much your horse itches
any sensitivities relating to the tail and mane
How often you need to apply the ointment really depends on the individual horse — it varies from horse to horse.
Diet also plays a part in how some horses react. Many horse owners opt for feed with a lower sugar and starch content during this period.
❄️ Please note in winter: linseed oil can thicken
At lower temperatures, neem oil naturally becomes thicker in consistency.
You can easily turn it back into a liquid by:
-
hold the bottle under a warm tap for a moment
-
to warm it up in your coat pocket
-
to hold it in your hands for a few minutes
It is normal for neem oil to vary in colour — this is to be expected with a pure, natural product.
