What is castor oil?
Castor oil is extracted from the seeds of the miracle tree (Ricinus communis). Known for its beneficial properties for the skin, this oil has been used for centuries for various purposes, including caring for the skin and coat of horses.
Benefits of castor oil (ricinus oil) in horse care
Castor oil is a natural oil rich in essential fatty acids and is known for its nourishing properties for the skin, coat, mane, tail and hooves.
Skin care:
Castor oil helps to nourish the skin and keep it moisturised, leaving dry and flaky skin feeling soft and supple. It helps to maintain healthy skin and can soothe the skin in cases of sensitivity.
Coat and mane:
Thanks to the Omega-9 fatty acids it contains, castor oil gives the coat a beautiful, natural shine. It can condition the mane and tail, helping them to look fuller and stronger, whilst restoring softness and suppleness to dry or brittle hair.
Hoof care:
Regularly massaging castor oil into the hooves can help to keep them strong and supple. It supports the hoof’s natural condition and helps to prevent it from drying out.

How to use Castor oil for the mane and tail?

Do not spread castor oil on open wounds.
Carefully massage the oil thinly into the tail and mane.
Leave the oil in the mane for as long as possible – at least 30 minutes – but do not leave it in for a few hours afterwards; wash it out instead. If necessary, apply shampoo to the mane and tail before rinsing with water, so that the oil washes out easily. Use castor oil 1–2 times a week as a treatment for best results.
How to use Castor oil for skin?
Apply a few drops of oil to your fingertips (use sparingly) and massage the oil into your skin. You can leave the oil on for 15 minutes or a few hours. The oil can sometimes feel thick and greasy, so it’s best not to apply it several times a day. The first time you use it, try it on a small patch of skin to see how your horse reacts. If all goes well, you can continue with the treatment.
