Introducing: Inge Lodewijckx; at my horse sanctuary Horse-Spirit, I have had several horses with severe summer eczema and mug. A shire that would lie down on the ground so he could slap and rub his neck on the ground. Belgians who were just stamping from itching because of the mug. A beautiful black mare that unfortunately had no more tail and mane and a shetlander that was itching all around. 
The shetlander had it to such an extent that his whole back and belly were also rubbed open in addition to the 'normal' spots like mane comb and tail. Many things I tried, both symptom relief on the outside and all kinds of methods for the inside. Unfortunately with little success. The vet's advice was to put him down because he really didn't have a nice life anymore. He was born with us and started shedding after only 3 weeks. It was still funny and cute then but that feeling soon disappeared when he started scrubbing his whole body.
